La sangre corría/Más fuerte que el agua
Blood flowed/Stronger than water
Lorca’s expressionist masterpiece, written on the eve of the Spanish Civil War, remade for the present moment in a new translation by Ben Naylor and Paula Rodriguez. A desolate landscape: the drylands, the vineyard, the creek, the church. The ancient tyrannies of family, land, property, honour, obsession, entitlement. And at the bleeding heart of it all, a bride and a groom, the unforgiving sun and the vengeful moon.
Pre-show talk and discussion on Lorca, Friday 9 December 6.15pm
Blood Wedding is one of Lorca’s most acclaimed and produced works, a play that continues to resonate almost 90 years after it was first produced. Professor Maria Delgado, author of Federico Garcia Lorca (Routledge, 2008) and Central’s Vice Principal, talks to actor/director/translator Paula Rodriguez and MA Acting Classical Course Leader and production director Ben Naylor, about their new translation of one of the 20th century’s most iconic plays, the challenges of translating Lorca into English, and the theatrical and political legacy of Lorca’s life and work.

More Information
The play takes place in the mind of its author, and in a small rural community in Andalucia or elsewhere in the world, a few or many generations ago.
Rather than learning a prescribed speech system to represent this community, each of the actors is working with rural accents or dialects with which they have a personal connection, either of heritage, geography or association. The text of the play has been adapted to accommodate these choices. All of the accents are to be thought of as belonging to this community, and not ‘other’.
Shortly before five in the morning of 18 July 1936, in the early weeks of the Spanish Civil War, Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain’s greatest living poet and playwright, was murdered by Nationalist militia in an olive grove between Viznar and Alfacar, outside his home city of Granada.
