For our My Journey to Central blog series, we chatted with BA (Hons) Contemporary Performance Practice, Writing for Performance student, Sherwin Douki. He is currently studying at Central and is due to graduate in 2021.
What were you doing before you came to Central?
I left my German hometown for Central right after graduating. Playing roles in local musical and theatre productions there I knew that an English speaking place was going to be the right foundation for my future career. Going over the pond felt too far then, so London it was!
How did you find out about Central?
I found about Central via a very lucky internet rabbit hole. In 2016 I spent a lovely summer in St. Albans, staying with a host family. One night, I watched “Cinderella” and started googling facts and behind the scenes information. I found out that Lily James had studied at a London drama school and got inspired.
How did you decide to apply to Central?
The diverse variety of broad possibilities that the BA (Hons) Contemporary Performance Practice offered stuck out to me!
What advice would you give to someone that is thinking about applying to
Central?
Do it! If it feels right, don’t hesitate, come prepared and do it! Know that not everything comes easy and that there will be harder and easier times. But to me, Central is a fertile ground for beautiful potential that lingers within you.
What have you enjoyed most about your time on your course?
The connections and people I had the honour to meet and get to know. In an industry that can perpetuate a fight of competition, I have found so much joy in collaboration, being supportive and lifting each other up. This is a memory and mindset I cherish and would like to take into the future.
What has surprised you the most about your course?
The level of commitment I have felt grow in me through the passion of telling stories the past three years at Central have intensified. Be it through writing, acting or singing.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I am developing a script at the moment that I feel very excited to keep working on. Without giving anything away, I can say that it oozes emotional resonance, zings with humour, and adapts a part of history that could not be more topical in our current times in an evocatively unique way.
Additionally, I am going to be focusing my energy on building up my career in the year ahead.
