Contemporary Performance Practice Programme

 

A programme of courses that will develop you as a performance maker. Through specialising in experimental performance, writing or applied performance you will learn to express and nurture your creative voice. The programme offers three courses: Drama, Applied Theatre and Education (DATE), Experimental Arts and Performance and Writing for Performance.

  • The programme offers students high-level performance-making skills alongside rigorous intellectual training. 
  • You can benefit from exceptional industry links, from visiting professionals to placements the access to the theatrical industry both in London, UK wide and internationally are invaluable to students’ emotional and professional development. 
  • Students have recently worked at the Camden People’s Theatre, Venice Biennale, Duckie Nightclub, HAU Berlin, Victoria and Albert Museum, Forest Fringe, Live Art Development Agency and with Tim Etchells, Tim Crouch, Bobby Baker and Action Hero.
  • Graduates go on to have a variety of careers, from performers and performance makers to teachers, facilitators to producers. The course equips you with the skills, ability and creativity to tackle the modern jobs market 
  • Choose from one of three distinct specialisms: Experimental Arts and Performance, Drama, Applied Theatre and Education or Writing for Performance. There is opportunity for collaboration and inter-disciplinary work between the courses.  

On the Drama, Applied Theatre and Education (DATE) course, you can:
Perform in, direct and devise theatre, explore performance that takes place outside traditional theatre environments. Make theatre to change lives and inspire change in communities. Build industry contacts worldwide through placements and outreach projects. Develop skills in areas such as facilitating, devising, directing, performing, playwriting and filmmaking.

Studying on the Experimental Arts and Performance course, you will:
Experiment, explore and create new forms of performance.
Develop critical skills to investigate, theorise and make new performance.
Produce work in professional environments.
Undertake projects with national and international arts organisations and practitioners.

On the course you will work with a variety of high profile writers, arts practitioners and directors, encountering a diverse range of innovative performance practices that use writing for performance in different ways.

Exclusive funding to support UK and overseas projects

The Writing for Performance and Drama, Applied Theatre and Education courses benefit from a £414,620 award from The Leverhulme Trust. This money funds applied theatre work across Central (including the MA Applied Theatre Courses). Projects that have benefited from Leverhulme funding include:

  • Residencies in SEN school in Cornwall
  • Delivering workshops for young people in Care/Care leavers in Manchester
  • Delivering workshops for a nationwide writing competition in primary and secondary schools
  • Training teachers to use creative teaching methods in Mumbai, India
  • Working with LGBT youth in Manchester
