Movement Experience whilst on the MA/MFA Movement: Directing and Teaching

2021 Assistant Choreographer on the opera Amadigi (Garsington Opera) working to assist and create choreography for the opera, mentored by Anna Morrissey. Choreographer Anna Morrissey and Directed by Netia Jones. Performed at Garsington Opera Festival June-July 2021.

2021 Movement Director for A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream. Directed by Jaq Bessel and mentored by Rose Ryan. MA Acting at GSA. Leading limbers, creating choreography and movement for the play. Performed at GSA in July 2021.

2020 Movement Teacher at GSA, mentored by Rose Ryan. Offering limbers and delivering classes for 1st Year BA Actors, Solo Dance and Laban Efforts. And an 8-week course to 2nd years in Tango.

Biography

Anna Alvarez is a Choreographer, Movement Director and Dancer of UK/ Latinx heritage.  She has toured and performed extensively across the UK, Argentina, Brazil and Israel. 

Wearing different hats within her profession, she works as a performer, choreographer and movement director.  She began her own company in 2019 with the objective of amplifying and staging contemporary Latinx work. 

As a performer she has worked with the Cia de Dança Deborah Colker, Gustavo Cirico, Frederico Paredes, Maira Maneschy, Noa Zuk, Yasmeen Godder, Vertigo Dance Company, Ella Mesma Company, Vincent Dance Theatre, Artolution, Leandro Palou Tango Academy, Extraordinary Bodies and the West End production of Fantasia. She was a quarter finalist in the European Tango Championships in 2018. She currently performs with DeNada Dance Theatre, appearing in the show The Bull and the Moon.

As a choreographer, her main output has been through her own productions but she has also received commissions to choreograph for Our City Dance festival (South East Dance 2019) and the Sadler’s Wells Fusion Showcases with Step Change Dance in 2018 and 2019. Anna regularly choreographs Stage Tango for couples and competitions. Anna created her first full length work Moonlight (CASA Theatre/Arcola Theatre) which tours in 2022 and won runner-up in the 2019 Lukas Awards for Best Production.

Anna began to transition into working as a Movement Director in the productions; The Maids (Stockwell Theatre), Two Women Can’t Tango (film by Maria Akim), La Lucha (Crowded Room and Battersea Arts Centre) and more recently My Uncle is Not Pablo Escobar (Royal Court/ Bush Theatre).

Anna is currently serving as an “Optimist” for China Plate under their up-and-coming new theatre maker’s program and works also as a facilitator for VDT, KIND and Artolution.
