Congratulations to Central’s Professor Maria Delgado, Vice Principal (Research and Knowledge Exchange), on her election to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando is the Spanish State Academy of Arts located in Madrid, Spain. Known for its renowned  art gallery, it forms part of the Spanish Institute. Created by Royal Decree in 1752, it is the longest-standing and culturally relevant artistic institution in Spain. It is one of the eight Royal Academies of national scope integrated into the Institute of Spain whose purpose is “to promote artistic creativity, as well as the study, dissemination and protection of the arts and cultural heritage, particularly painting, sculpture, architecture, music and the new arts of the image”.

Members of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando must be nominated and elected and must be ‘personalities of recognised prestige’ within the fields of architecture, painting, sculpture, music, cinema, graphic art, photography, design or art history and theory.

Professor Delgado has been elected as a Corresponding Academic as she lives and works in the United Kingdom. She is one of only three academics to represent the United Kingdom in the Academy alongside art historian, curator and scholar Juliet Wilson-Bareau, and the art historian and Director of the National Gallery Dr Gabriele Finaldi.
