Central Students Perform for Royal Visit

On Wednesday 6 November, Central students performed for The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at a very special event commemorating the 20thAnniversary of the London Farmers’ Market.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited the Swiss Cottage Farmers’ Market, which is situated immediately in front Central on Eton Avenue, where they met farmers and producers – some of whom have been selling with London Farmers Markets since 1999.  They were accompanied on their visit by Sir Ian Johnstone CBE, QPM, DL the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Camden, and Cheryl Cohen of London Farmers’ Markets.

As a part of the festivities, their Royal Highnesses were entertained by a ‘flash mob’ performance from students on Central’s MA Music Theatre course who performed an a capella arrangement of  ‘Who Will Buy?’ from Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver! The performance was conceived and directed by MA Music Theatre Course Leader Professor Paul Barker.  Following the performance, students met and spoke with The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall as they toured the Market.

Swiss Cottage Farmers’ Market opened in 1999, at a time when there were no other farmers markets in the city. London Farmers’ Markets now have 22 weekly markets in London with around 250 farmers and local producers selling across the markets.  Staff and Students of Central are regular visitors to the Market, which runs every Wednesday in front of the School.

The MA Music Theatre course at Central is a one-year postgraduate course for performers which involves acting, singing, dancing, playing instruments, composing, writing for the stage and choreography.  Alumni can be found starring on the West End and in Broadway shows, as well as in operas, films, theatre productions and videogames.  The course is led by Professor Paul Alan Barker, an accomplished composer, pianist, conductor, writer and stage director whose operas and theatre works have been performed and recorded all over the world.
