Central student Ryan Denton has been featured in a new, national campaign from Universities UK - the ‘100 Faces Campaign - highlighting the success stories of students who are the first in their families to attend university.

Ryan, who is a final year Drama, Applied Theatre and Education student at Central and is the first in his family to attend university, was recognised in the Campaign’s Local Heroes category. This category honours exceptional students who give back and are determined to make the world a better place. Alongside his engaged community work in Applied Theatre, Ryan is also an active student ambassador, regularly running tours and talking to prospective students, helping to explain the process of applying for university, what life is like as a student at Central, and helping to demystify the university experience.

Of his journey to Central, Ryan said:

“There are multiple reasons why I was keen to go to university. For myself, like many, I considered it a gateway and strong first step on a career ladder… University has been a massively fulfilling experience. My understandings have been expanded, reshaped and formed.”

Vivienne Stern MBE, Chief Executive of Universities UK, commented

“The experiences of students who are the first in their families to have been to university tell a powerful story… I believe we have a responsibility to keep working to ensure a wider range of people in this country get access to the potentially transformative experience of going to university.”

Universities UK’s ‘100 Faces Campaign’ aims to champion and celebrate the positive impact of ‘first-in-the-family’ graduates on the UK. The campaign includes England footballer Beth Mead, Lord David Blunkett, Nobel Prize winner Sir Chris Pissarides and actor Amit Shah. It also highlights the need for access to support, including a call for the government to reinstate the maintenance grant and to increase support for students to ensure the next generation can reach their graduate potential.
