Shakespeare’s very first play is set in an Italy of true romance – a world of errant knights, distracted lovers and brigands. Two best friends, Proteus and Valentine, leave their home city of Verona and travel to Milan where they both fall in love with the Duke’s daughter, Silvia. Silvia loves Valentine, but Proteus pursues her despite the fact he is betrothed to Julia back home. After a confrontation in the forest, Proteus and Valentine reconcile. Proteus rediscovers his love for Julia and both couples marry.
