In collaboration with Elizabeth Hauptmann
A new version by Simon Stephens
Performed by BA (Hons) Acting CDT
Designed & produced by BA (Hons) Theatre Practice
In an exciting new adaptation by Simon Stephens, Acting CDT bring Brecht and Kurt Weil’s classic to life – expect scandal, humour, and naughtiness.
London’s most notorious criminal, Macheath, has recently married Polly, the daughter of Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum, leader of the beggars. Mr Peachum is so displeased that he concocts a plan to have his new son-in-law hanged. Through a deceitful web of blackmail, bribery and brothels, Macheath is caught and taken to the gallows. Will he hang or will he be offered an escape? Witness the story unfold in this magnificent opera for beggars.
By permission of Universal Edition AG, Vienna. On behalf of Universal Edition (London) Ltd on behalf of European American Music Corp. (EAMC) and Alan Brodie Representation.
This production contains haze, simulated gun shots, very strong language, scenes discussing and depicting physical violence, sexual acts, sexual violence, substance use and abuse, knives, miscarriage, and potential hanging.

The Threepenny Opera with Sherrill Gow and director David Ashley
Friday 4 March, following the 7:30pm performance
Sherrill Gow is Joint Head of Postgraduate Performance at Mountview (Acting and Musical Theatre pathways) and a (hopefully soon-to-be finished) PhD candidate at Central. Her research develops feminist practices to critique and intervene in musical theatre training and repertoire that tacitly accept or vigorously reproduce restrictively androcentric, ableist, classist, Eurocentric, and heterocentric worldviews. She identifies principles and methods from feminist performance criticism and pedagogies, musical theatre scholarship, and acting and directing techniques, to consider how these might work together to create an anti-oppressive framework for conservatoire training. Her paper ‘Queering Brechtian feminism: Breaking down gender binaries in musical theatre pedagogical practices’ was selected for the Bruce Kirle Memorial 2018 Debut Panel by the Musical Theatre/Dance focus group of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) and published in Studies in Musical Theatre.
