Overview

Let England Shake! 1646, soldiers are fighting in the belief that Christ will come and establish heaven on earth. It’s England’s great moment of revolution and for a time anything seems possible. Is there a chance of greater equality and the start of true democracy in England, or will the forces of property and establishment prevail?

“For really I think that the poorest he in England hath a life to live as the greatest he”, Colonel Thomas Rainborough, a Leveller.

The play explores the ‘levelling’, ecstatic and anarchic ideals surging throughout the English Civil war, and their ultimate betrayal.

“You great Curmudgeons, you hang a man for stealing, when you yourselves have stolen from your brethren all land and creatures”, More Light Shining in Buckinghamshire, a Digger pamphlet 1649.
