Today we are speaking with Marcia Vidal Nolte, a current student on the Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media, MA about her play, Sorry For Your Loss.

What have you been working on?

I’ve been working on Sorry For Your Loss which will be available to stream online on Monday 21 March at 6pm.

Sounds exciting! What is the play about?

Sorry for Your Loss is a comedy on how people in their 20s handle grief and the strange coming of age that happens along with it. The play follows Constantine, photographer turned mortician, and about to cremate her brother, when Esther walks into the mortuary.

They befriend each other and discover the different ways they grieve. Through this satirical plot, they learn from each other what the grieving process is like for people that are coming into the quarter life crisis and try to come to terms with their lives after the loss of loved ones. All of this accompanied with Constantine’s dead dad’s playlist of oldies but goodies.

How did you get involved in this project?

I’ve been workshopping this play for over two years, with multiple readings and most recently, I had production of Sorry for Your Loss at The Tank in New York City, in  August 2021.

I am hoping this reading gives this play the exposure needed for a London run.

What made you want to write this play?

I think we have a draught of generational themes in contemporary writing. Every time I would see something I would be like, I get it but this feels like it’s for my parents’ generation. I wanted to write something specific to my generation.

For this reading I am also making a few changes to adapt it for a UK audience, which hopefully is a great learning process for everyone in the room, and a great challenge for me as a writer.

What have you been getting up to?

I’ve been busy with my coursework and managing this upcoming production, as it’s my first UK project.

How is this related to your coursework?

This work is not directly related to my coursework, but I am studying on the Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media, MA, so there is some overlap in techniques, as I have written a stage play.

What has surprised you most about your experience?

The need to take on various roles to make the production happen. I have had to look for the actors, a director, the company itself, etc.

The cast even includes Central alum, Joshua Griffin (BA (Hons) Acting CDT) 2020.

How did you find out about Central and decide to study with us?

I found out about Central while doing some internet research on writing courses, while I was living in the USA.

What are you planning to do after graduation?

I hope to work closely with theatres that focus on producing new works while also putting up my own work.
