As part of Central’s Keep Creating Appeal, we’re speaking to students who have received Scholarships and Bursaries whilst studying at Central, to showcase the impact that these have on them, and their future careers.

Grace Dwyer-Cummins is a second year BA (Hons) Theatre Practice - Prop Making student, she talks with us about her recent placement with Punchdrunk and her work on production, Promiscuous/Cities.

What projects have you been working on?

I have just finished a placement with Punchdrunk as a Prop Maker, working on their latest production, The Burnt City, which was great. I also made wearable animal costumes for the Central production of Promiscuous/Cities.

What does a typical working day look like for you at the moment?

“No day is the same…its always new and exciting; sampling materials, researching and making in the workshop. When I’m home at the end of the day, I’ll continue painting or working on a personal project - currently I’m creating sustainable cardboard props.

You received a Scholarship or Bursary, what impact has this had on you and your studies?

Luckily I’ve managed to cut down on my work outside of prop making. The bursary has helped a lot with living costs. I can afford to spend some of the bursary on materials, such as new paints and brushes. It means I can continue to do what I love.

What are you currently planning on doing after graduation?

I want to establish myself as a prop maker in film and theatre. Owning my own company is the goal.

What advice would you have for anyone looking to follow in your footsteps?

If you love it, go for it. Life would be boring if you didn’t take chances, creativity keeps the world moving!
