As part of Central’s Big Give Christmas Challenge, we’re speaking to students and alumni who have received Scholarships and Bursaries whilst studying at Central, to showcase the impact that these can have on them, and their future careers.

Cordelia Lightfoot-Jennings, a first year student on our BA (Hons) Drama, Applied Theatre and Education (DATE) course, spoke with us about fulfilling her life-long dream to study at Central, the impact a Bursary has had on her studies, and about what she hopes to do in the future.

What made you want to study at Central, and particularly on our DATE course?

It has been a dream of mine to study at Central ever since I was little. I wanted to study somewhere that took my qualities as an individual and developed them, rather than changing me into something generic.  Everyone has something in their life that provides them with this one emotion that I will never be able to fully explain and for me, that is performing.

The course allows me to work with others to put together a performance, or to use drama workshops to help make someone’s day, and that just fills me with so much passion and drive, I could not imagine a world without it.

What has surprised you most about studying at Central?

The lecturers at Central are so unique – they allow us so much creative freedom. They share with us their knowledge from the industry, but also listen to our own personal experiences, which has shaped my learning in a new way that I have not experienced before.

What does a typical working day look like for you at the moment?

I have just finished my first critical reflection assignment! My hours vary week to week, but I’ve also been able to find time to explore other creative opportunities at Central, such as taking part in the Student Union netball team, and working with the recruitment team as a Student Ambassador, which I absolutely love.

You received a Bursary to study at Central, what impact has this had on your studies?

My Bursary has helped me so much! Not only has it helped to fund things on my course, such as my DBS check and books, but it also means I haven’t had to spend hours working multiple jobs to get me through the week. This extra time has meant that I have been able to go for so many opportunities that I simply would not have had the time for, such as running for Student Union, or becoming a Student Ambassador.

What would you say to those thinking of donating funds for Scholarships or Bursaries for Central’s students?

It honestly makes the world of difference to me, not just financially, but motivationally. The feeling of someone outside of your own family choosing to support your journey drives you to work harder, as someone out there believes in you enough to help you out. I work so hard every day to make sure I make the most of it.

What advice would you have for those hoping to follow in your footsteps in the industry?

Do not listen to anyone if it goes against your heart. I was told I would never even get into a drama course, let alone get into Central! Criticism is your best friend, but always be ready to put the work in and prove everyone wrong.

What are you currently planning on doing after graduation?

I want to give a straightforward answer, but unfortunately, I can’t. So many students out there are most likely stressing about not having a clear plan, but I quite like it. Being on the DATE course means that there are endless opportunities for life after graduation, and most DATE graduates tend to find their post-grad jobs on their placements, so I am just taking it all in.

Central’s Big Give Christmas Challenge raises vital funds for Scholarships and Bursaries for our students, and this year will run from 30 November to 7 December 2021.
