As part of Central’s Big Give Christmas Challenge, we’re speaking to students and alumni who have received Scholarships and Bursaries whilst studying at Central, to showcase the impact that these can have on them, and their future careers.

Conor Gormley is a second year student on our BA (Hons) Acting (Musical Theatre) course, he speaks with us about leaving a science degree to come to Central to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor, and the impact that a Scholarship has had on his studies.

What made you choose to study at Central?

I was initially studying on a science course at another university, and it really wasn’t for me.  Outside of that I was pursuing acting and musical theatre, and then a friend recommended that I think about applying to drama school.

As part of the application and audition process for Central, I met Course Leader, Wendy Gadian, and after a conversation with her I made up my mind that I wanted to train at Central.

What has surprised you most about the course?

The intensity has surprised me…in terms of the hours of training.  We were told about it before hand, but to experience it is really something else. However, my training makes me feel very fulfilled and satisfied, and I know it’s going to be worthwhile!

What does a typical working day look like for you at the moment?

We start with warm-ups at 8am, then we train through until 6pm.  Usually the morning is a range of voice and dance, and then in the afternoon we have acting lessons.

You received a Scholarship to study on your course, what impact has this had on you and your studies?

Life at Central is so all-consuming and you need to be 100% present in the training room all the time. I couldn’t do that without my Scholarship. The financial support gives me the breathing room so that I can put my heart and soul into my studies.

What would you say to those thinking of donating funds for Scholarships or Bursaries for Central’s students?

It goes without saying, but I think Scholarships and Bursaries are so needed. Anyone who gives at any amount is making a transformational difference to people. Central drives the industry, so by giving you are making a direct impact on the industry.

What advice would you have for those hoping to follow in your footsteps in the industry?

Don’t let financial barriers put you off.  Putting yourself through the training can be done.

What are you currently planning on doing after graduation?

I’m hoping to be going straight onto the West End!

Central’s Big Give Christmas Challenge raises vital funds for Scholarships and Bursaries for our students, and this year will run from 30 November to 7 December 2021.
