As part of Central’s Big Give Christmas Challenge, we’re speaking to students and alumni who have received Scholarships and Bursaries whilst studying at Central, to showcase the impact that these can have on them, and their future careers.

Alex Ward is a second year BA (Hons) Acting Musical Theatre student, he spoke with us about led him to studying at Central, the impact his Scholarship has had on him, and his advice for those looking to follow in his footsteps.

What made you choose to study at Central?

I picked Central because it was the only drama school that came to Plymouth. Talking about my aspirations with the staff during their visit, made me think, “hmm, maybe I could apply to drama school”. So, I did some more research online and found out about the amazing people who had studied at Central and – well – you can’t help but be impressed. Then, I read in detail about the Musical Theatre course here, and I knew it was the perfect course for me.

What has surprised you most about studying at Central?

What has surprised me most is that before I came to Central I thought, you know, that it would be very pretentious. But everyone is really down to earth, and so friendly.

What does a typical working day look like for you at the moment?

My typical day at Central is long and really intense, but so unbelievably rewarding.

You received a Scholarship, what impact has this had on you and your studies?

My Scholarship has given me purpose. It is the biggest privilege of my life to be studying this course at Central.

I can afford to pay my rent, so I’m not anywhere near as worried about money. Of course, money worries are always there for us all, but I’m not currently stressing about how to afford a roof over my head from month to month, or how to afford food. Those basic needs have been met. I can’t really put into words the huge positive difference my Scholarship makes to me - it’s beyond incredible.

What would you say to those thinking of donating funds for Scholarships or Bursaries for Central’s students?

I’d say just how much of a positive impact financial support makes….it really is a deal-breaker for many. To receive financial support is amazing and makes training a possibility. To invest back in the industry is amazing, and I’d love to be able to do that for others in the future.

What advice would you have for those hoping to follow in your footsteps in the industry?

Don’t give up working and studying. If anyone tells you not to follow this path, ignore them. I’ve met people who have told me that I wouldn’t make it, but I couldn’t accept that and now I know that they refer to me with pride as someone who’s achieving great things. I am living the dream and it’s such fun.

What are you hoping to do after graduation?

I’d love to work on a Netflix project, or be on stage at the National Theatre. Anything that challenges me.

Central’s Big Give Christmas Challenge raises vital funds for Scholarships and Bursaries for our students, and this year will run from 30 November to 7 December 2021.
