Today we are speaking with Candice Morel, a current student on the Drama, Applied Theatre and Education (DATE), BA course about her company Impossible Theatre and the upcoming Cabaret event.

What are you up to?

I am currently working on producing and performing in a Cabaret with my company Impossible Theatre. This Cabaret will feature drag, singing, stand up and burlesque.

When is the event?

Cabaret will be happening on Thursday, 30 September, 7.30-10.30pm at The Cavendish Arms -  128 Hartington Road, London SW8 2HJ

Tell us more about Impossible Theatre!

Impossible Theatre was launched by myself and Caroline Dargelos. We are both native French speakers and fluent in English. We met in London, where we have worked for companies like, French British Improvisation, Exchange Theatre and RSC Education.

The name of the company was inspired by my own personal life experience. I was diagnosed with strong dyslexia and dyspraxia when I was very young and told that I would never speak a foreign language or write it properly. Yet, here I am! I  came to London, learned English, wrote and performed my own show and started this company with Caroline.

What made you want to put on a Cabaret event?

I am passionate about the world of Cabaret and started to take burlesque dancing lessons a few years ago to learn more. Since my lessons, I have worked a few times as a burlesque performer and have had the idea to produce a Cabaret for a long time. So when, Caroline and I created the company Impossible Theatre, we decided to create this Cabaret for September.

Why a Cabaret?

Why? Because a Cabaret is full of joy. It is a place where we can be free to do and be what we want and mostly because at a Cabaret you are allowed to be silly, sexy and funny and weird. This fun and freedom is exactly what we need after the last year.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently producing three artists, two stand up comedians and one drag queen. I am also performing two burlesque acts and my fellow producer will be singing and dancing in the performance. Caroline and I have created the shape of the show, the ambiance and I even customised some of the costumes myself.

How is this project related to your coursework?

This project is related to my course work in the sense that it explores themes like body image, judgement and silliness. It also features performers from France and England. This Cabaret will educate people in a way, to show that it is ok to be weird, to be too much, to not fit in and to have fun, and be silly and sexy, no matter the way you look. Plus, I have a fellow Drama, Applied Theatre and Education (DATE), BA student, Annalise Ebejer, working on the Cabaret project with us. We will be co-hosting the evening together.

What has surprised you most about your experience?

I could say the whole process is more difficult that I had expected and learning how to advertise a show is very useful and rewarding, but quite hard.

How did you find out about Central and decide to study with us?

I found out about Central when I arrived in London, by talking with other fellow actors about which drama school was the best. I decided to study here by reading the description of the Drama, Applied Theatre and Education (DATE), BA course. I knew that it was exactly what I wanted to do and learn within the theatre field.

What are you planning to do after graduation?

After graduation I would mostly like to work with women (female identify being) and create projects in the aim to empower them, with a focus on body image and confidence. I would love to use cabaret for that. I would also like to give theatre, art workshop in prisons for women.
