Joanna is a performance artist specialising in movement and dance. Born in London where she had a broad artistic education, creative dance (Laban and Wigman), music (Finchley Children's Music Group) and drama (school), Joanna studied Art, History and English Literature to A level and ballet outside school. After completing a four-year dance training at London Contemporary Dance School she was offered a job directing a dance company and school in Sicily where she gained experience choreographing, teaching and performing as well as directing (Arte Danza). Here she also started working in physical theatre (Teatro Molo Due) and toured her own solo programme. In 1992 Joanna moved to Rome where she could work with the wider dance and physical theatre community as well as in opera (Rome National Opera) and with companies from New York (Bill T Jones and Plath Taucher Dance).
Alongside performing Joanna has also taught a wide variety of movement styles, ranging from contemporary and creative dance, ballet and jazz to physical theatre and musical theatre as well as mime, opera and devised theatre. She draws on her versatile experience and early musical background when choreographing and directing movement and is interested in adapting and devising creative folk, morris and period dances and in directing movement and dance for large groups as well as devising work with small physical theatre ensembles. Creating works for a wide range of ages and abilities has given Joanna insight into what motivates people to move and how body and character influence movement.
Since returning to the UK in 2008 Joanna's fascination for the English language, theatre and narrative has re-emerged. She has become increasingly interested in working with actors and directing movement for theatre which has brought her back to working with adults and professionals in a specialist field. She is keen to direct movement for performance, to tutor actor students in movement fundamentals and work with professional actors on embodying character.
Joanna lives in London and has three children who are at different stages of their own careers and education.
