Movement Experience whilst on the MA Movement: Directing and Teaching

2022 Movement Directing/ Devising Facilitator. Working with MA Contemporary Performance Manchester School of Theatre on Artistic Practice Module, devising a work-in-progress movement piece inspired by the Myth of Orpheus with Babel Theatre and HOME.

2022 Movement teacher. Working with MA Character Animation students at Central St. Martins on placement. Movement workshops for animation projects created in partnership with London International Animation Festival.

2022 Movement Teacher. Mentored by Anna Healey. Working with 1st year BA (Hons) Acting: Musical Theatre students at Central on placement. Movement workshops and classes exploring ‘Elements’ and embodiment for text.

2021-2022 Director. The Fall - Babel Theatre. Working as lead creative across several R&D’s of a new piece of physical theatre with dance, movement and visual artists.

2021 Creative Lead. Galapagos R&D London International Mime Festival and David Glass Ensemble. Leading a group of artists through a week of movement exploration opening up themes of a new production.

2019 Director. The Orpheus Project - Sichuan Academy Of Art/ Chengdu, China. Leading a 12 week physical exploration of the Myth of Orpheus and devising an ensemble performance with Acting students.

2019 Director. David Glass Ensemble/ Marphy’s Playhouse, China. Across 4 months working with young non-English speaking children ranging from 4-16 to devise and direct a variety of classical myths and stories.

2018 Director. The Fall - Work in progress - Babel Theatre/ PUSH Festival. With support from HOME and Waterside Arts Centre leading a creative team to devise a new physical work exploring social debt, cycles of trauma and intergenerational relationships.

As a Facilitator

2021 Co-Facilitator with Binki Taylor (Brixton Project). ROOTED. Leading a week of self-inquiry into post-colonial bodies and modern health narratives in partnership with Lambeth Council, Make in Brixton and Babel Theatre.

2021 Associate Artist/ Facilitator with David Glass Ensemble Lost Child Project. Delivering a series of professional development workshops in the creative practice of Lost Child Project to teachers and facilitators across UK and Hong Kong.

2021 Lead Facilitator. The Orpheus Project with Babel Theatre, Rich Mix and Tower Hamlets Council. Delivering a series of movement and creativity workshops for young men around combatting loneliness and masculinity narratives.

2020 Creative Tutor. National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. Leading Movement and Creativity workshops with Orchestra participants aged 5-15.

2019 International Facilitator. Sichuan Contemporary Performance Festival, China. Leading experiential movement workshops in connection, freedom, play, physical expressivity and dynamism at the International Performance Festival and for Company Dancers.

2018 Workshop Facilitator/ Director. Complicité / Barbican - Barbican Box. Working with Complicité and Barbican to facilitate and direct performance pieces created through workshops and devising residencies with students and teachers at FE level.

Biography

Joseph is a movement director, facilitator and teacher. He has worked nationally and internationally as a theatre director and teacher, devising and collaborating on productions and projects with some of the world’s most acclaimed companies and institutions. 

Joseph graduated with a 1st class degree in Physical Theatre from East 15 Acting School and has since trained extensively in Biomechanics, ensemble devising and contemporary movement practices. 

As a facilitator and associate he has worked with Barbican, Brixton Project, Complicité, David Glass Ensemble, HOME, National Children’s Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra Tamasha, Redbridge Drama Centre and more. 

He has taught at ALRA, Central Saint Martins, East 15 Acting School, Liverpool School of Theatre, and Manchester Metropolitan University. 

Alongside work as a movement director and teacher, Joseph is Artistic Director of award-winning Babel Theatre where he oversees the creative direction and implementation of arts programs and projects across the country.  Through their productions , he investigates appropriate forms to unpack the contemporary experience of living. 

Joseph is passionate about 21st century actor training, contemporary devising practices, ensemble theatre making, and making creative experiences inclusive and accessible. He has recently worked alongside Lambeth Council and The Brixton Project and deliver Rooted, a new creative arts program exploring the post-colonial body, and with Make it in Brixton and the Mayor’s Creative Enterprise Zone supported projects with White Allies which invites white people to investigate how they have profited from racism and oppression.
