I am a London-born Black Brit whose parents arrived in England and settled in north London in 1950. Born in 1954, I can honestly say I had a charmed childhood who, encouraged by my parents and teachers, was stimulated to do his best. I fell in love with theatre and directing in my teens. At uni, my passion for a theatrical life came into conflict with my passion for pursuing racial equality, fanned by the civil rights movements in the USA and anti-apartheid activists in South Africa and the UK. During my career, then, my artistic work has had to be balanced with working with government, agencies and companies to achieve diversity, equity and inclusion or diversity in all aspects, but especially racial equality.
