Congratulations to Central Vice President Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock who has been recognised with a Damehood in the 2024 New Year Honours list. 

The New Year Honours List recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom, including those who have made achievements in public life and those who have committed themselves to serving and helping others. 

Central Vice President Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock was awarded a Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire in this year’s List for her services to science education and to diversity.   

Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a space scientist and science communicator as well as Chancellor of the University of Leicester and a Vice President of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. She studied at Imperial College London, where she obtained her degree in Physics and her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. She has spent her career making novel, bespoke instrumentation in both the industrial and academic environments.   

To further share her passion for science, Maggie founded “Science Innovation Ltd”. Through this she conducts public engagement activities, sharing her love of space. To date Maggie has directly given speeches to over 400,000 people around the world. As well as public speaking, she is an author, a BAFTA nominated TV presenter and co-hosts the world’s longest-running science television program “The Sky at Night”.

More than 1,200 recipients have been awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a focus on those who have given with generosity to others in need. Individuals in the 2024 New Year Honours List have been recognised for being dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers and supporters of young people.
