On Tuesday 12 March, nominations for the highly anticipated 2024 Olivier Awards were announced, and we are delighted to share the news that several Central graduates have been recognised for their outstanding contributions across various categories. 

Best Sound Design

  • Dan Balfour and Tom Gibbons for Dear England at the National Theatre – Olivier and Prince Edward Theatre
  • Gareth Fry for Macbeth at the Donmar Warehouse

Best Lighting Design

Best Revival

  • The Effect at the National Theatre (including intimacy direction by Ingrid Mackinnon 
  • Macbeth at Donmar Warehouse (starring Cush Jumbo, with sound design by Gareth Fry and vocal/dialect coaching by Barbara Houseman)
  • Shirley Valentine at the Duke of York’s Theatre (lighting design by Lucy Carter)
  • Vanya at the Duke of York’s Theatre (with sound design by Dan Balfour and video systems design from Mogzi)

Best Entertainment or Comedy Play

  • Accidental Death of an Anarchist at the Lyric Hammersmith (with video/projection design by Matt Powell)
  • Old Friends at the Gielgud Theatre (produced by Sir Cameron Mackintosh, with stage management from Ella McDermott, company management by Katy Bryant, deputy stage management by Rachel Phillips and Video System Design from Mogzi)
  • Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Phoenix Theatre (produced by Sonia Friedman, including performance by Ammar Duffus, technical direction by Gary Beestone, associate set design by Joana Dias, choreography by Coral Messam, and Senior Video Engineers, Mogzi and Alex Ramsden)

Best Musical Revival

  • Groundhog Day at the Old Vic (with assistant stage management by Ashley Mochan and voice/dialect coaching by Penny Dyer)
  • Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre (with lighting design by Honorary Fellow Paule Constable and company management by Jonathan Stott)
  • Hadestown at the Lyric Theatre (with performance by Madeline Charlemagne, casting by Jacob Sparrow, and assistant stage management by Ashley Mochan)
  • Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre (with voice/dialect coaching by Hazel Holder, lighting design by Jack Knowles, and intimacy direction by Ingrid Mackinnon)

Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre

  • Blue Mist at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre (with assistant direction by Aneesha Srinivasan and stage management by Catriona McHugh and Charlotte Padgham)
  • Sleepova at the Bush Theatre (with voice/dialect coaching by Gurkiran Kaur, set and costume design by Cara Evans, and intimacy and fight direction by Enric Ortuño)
  • The Time Machine: A Comedy at the Park Theatre (directed by Orla O’Loughlin)

Best Family Show

Best New Play

Best New Musical

  • Operation Mincemeat at the Fortune Theatre (with performance by Holly Sumpton and deputy sound by Jessica Cluff)
