An afternoon of events to explore the ways in which theatre can engage and improve good health.
As part of the seventh annual Creativity and Wellbeing Week in association with London Arts & Health Forum, these two seminars complement each other: one looks at work in hospital, the other in the community.
It is possible to book for each event individually or to come for the whole afternoon.
2-4pm: Achieving excellence in hospital settings
This seminar offers an insight into the ways theatre can change the experience of patients in hospitals. Featuring performances and discussion from theatre-makers, commissioners and insight from patients themselves.
Theatre offers a fresh way of engaging with patients in hospital, especially groups of patients who may find the hospital experience frightening and overwhelming. Theatre practitioners are exploring new ways of engaging patients in hospital and this seminar will bring together a range of perspectives to understand what is involved in taking theatre into a hospital setting and what happens when it is done well.
Among the topics which will be explored are:
- Commissioning theatre for performance at the bedside – Rebecca Seymour, Elevate Co-ordinator, ArtCare, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust
- Working in hospitals, challenge and opportunity – Stephanie Jalland, Hoodwink Theatre
- Co-producing theatre with children, young people and families in hospital – Susie Hall Hopkinson, Great Ormond Street Hospital
The seminar will also feature performances from Hoodwink Theatre and Peut-Etre Theatre as well as a panel discussion to examine some of the issues chaired by Dr Katharine Low, Lecturer, Applied Theatre and Community Performance, The Royal Central School of Speech & Drama
This first seminar will be followed by a second looking at the issues involved in developing theatre projects to improve health in community settings.
4.30-6pm: Artistry and Quality in community provision/practice?
A seminar bringing together theatre and performance makers and participants to examine challenges and best practice when working in community settings around issues of mental health and recovery. The seminar will discuss different approaches to practice and reflect on ways of working which celebrate participants’ as artists and consider how to best create community interventions for mental health benefits utilising theatre and performance practices.
Contributions include:
- Kindred Minds – ‘ “We get to be” – Partnership in Theatre Making and Mental Health’ with Gail Babb (Producer for Participation and Learning at Talawa Theatre Company) and a participant-collaborator from Kindred Minds Theatre Group
- Fallen Angels – Socially engaged theatre with people in recovery from addiction – Dr Zoe Zontou (Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Hope and Researcher in Residence at Fallen Angels) and a participant from Fallen Angels.
The afternoon will conclude with a panel discussion – chaired by Damian Hebron, Director of London Arts in Health Forum followed by refreshments and networking.
