Your Learning Experience

The student experience and a collaborative approach to learning are at the centre of Central’s mission; we aim to support all our students to become employable and successful in their careers. All our academic staff are dedicated to high quality teaching and research, and are experts in their own fields, bringing a wealth of industry experience.

Approach

Our aim is to support all our students to gain valued qualifications, industry skills and the confidence to enable them to become highly employable and successful in their chosen career. We encourage our students to reflect critically on their practice and develop their own learning experience by creating an equal partnership between students and academics, giving scope to experiment in a supportive environment and ensuring an unrivalled education.

The Experience

As a Central student, you will have to apply yourself both mentally and physically, you will develop your craft and be expected to engage intellectually. Central has rigorous codes of behaviour, insists on punctual attendance and timely delivery of work. The amount of time you spend on-site may be greater than in many universities. You will need to be disciplined and committed and this will prepare you for standards required in the industry.

Our Academics

Academic staff at Central demonstrate a dedicated commitment to high-quality teaching and research. All are experts in their own fields and bring a wealth of industry experience, offering students a unique opportunity to gain a high-quality education, balanced with the very best industry knowledge.

Students at Central learn through research informed teaching. All academic staff represent the teaching and learning excellence that Central is known for and some thirty members of the teaching staff are actively involved in our dynamic research community. Research is a key element of the work we undertake which feeds into, and enhances the student learning experience.

With an extensive network of visiting professionals and regional, national and international companies who provide placement opportunities for students, our learning environment extends well beyond its north London campus and into the professional industries it serves. Many of our students get their first professional jobs through contacts that they have made during their studies. Because of our reputation, a close relationship to our industries and our focus on areas of theatre practice, some of our graduates find work in their chosen field immediately, or even before, they have completed their course.

For more information see Our Industry Connections.

Visiting Professionals

Bridging the gap between industry and higher education, we work with a range of visiting professionals to offer lectures and masterclasses, to complement the teaching of Central’s cutting-edge academics and practitioners. Visitors include national and international speakers and academics, guest directors and designers, who will work alongside senior students in production teams, or as mentors on various projects, enriching the student learning experience.

Quality Standards

The quality of Central’s degrees is assured by our own rigorous processes, which are externally audited on a regular basis. Where appropriate our honours and master’s degrees are accredited by relevant professional bodies, for example in the case of the Drama and Movement Therapy course, the Health Professions Council.
