Project Title

Mask as Myth, Myth as Mask: Investigating the archetypal tools available to the actor creator – Lecoq and Campbell

Supervisor

Dr. Tara McAllister-Viel

Abstract

I have proposed a practice lead examination of the link between mask and myth.  Within this research I am interested in the development of ‘the actor creator’ – a devising actors who engage in collaborative authorship. I ask the questions:

  • How does the mask aid in the development of the actor creator?
  • How does myth aid in the development of the devising ensemble?

I assert that masks act as individual myths, and that myths can be worn as group masks for actor devisors.

Profile

My research proposal is a direct consequence of my work as a professional actor creator, collaborating with numerous devising ensembles.  Since graduating from the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA) in 2006, I have been involved in the creation and performance of 15 original productions, with several different companies.  I have toured throughout the UK, Ireland, Spain, the Czech Republic, and, in the United States, in California, New York, and Massachusetts.
