Sarah’s interest in theatre movement was ignited by her experience of choreography and devised theatre. She began developing her own work whilst studying Literature at Edinburgh University, exploring movement as a story telling device in both narrative and non-linear work. Her own work utilizes improvisation and play as a method of exploring ideas and creating content that is rooted within the actors' own experience.
She is fascinated by the expressivity of the body and by the relationship between text and movement, which led her to Movement Directing and the MFA at Central. Her love of the outdoors also inspires a deep interest in movement and the environment, and the connection between the body and its surroundings. Her MFA research is exploring the use of site exploration in the creation of movement languages. Her practice is therefore considering how to develop actors' sensitivity to space, and how to build movement that echoes and evokes the quality of space at a particular site. She then questions how this spatial quality can be maintained when the site of performance may change.
