I am a senior lecturer in voice and I teach on the BA Acting Collaborative and Devised Theatre Course and the MA/MFA Voice Studies: Teaching and Coaching course. I am developing innovative practice in teaching voice and I train and mentor voice teachers, within Central, wider across the UK and internationally. My continuing professional development seeks to invigorate my pedagogy and that of the teachers that I supervise and mentor.
Equitable training practices are at the heart of my work and I have dedicated my time to reviewing and revising curricula and pedagogy within voice and actor training from this perspective. I have developed a model of systematic review that places the student voice at the centre and have used this model to investigate the experiences of acting students with specific learning differences, dyslexia and dyspraxia. This work has led to a successful revision of teaching and learning strategies and the development of good practice principles. I have also developing a new approach in training accents and dialects that seeks to work at the intersection of voicework and identity. This work to has led to an inclusive curriculum that develops high-level skills in a diverse setting. I have also developed innovative integrative practice of Linklater Voicework and Michael Chekhov Acting Technique.
I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2019 and I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I sit on the board of directors for the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association, where I am responsible for network development internationally.
