Profile

Barry Fitzgerald is a director, theatre-maker and performer. He trained at Manchester Met and Arts Ed London and has worked on projects with the Almeida Theatre, Arcola Theatre, Barbican, Complicité, Gendered Intelligence, Hackney Shed, London Bubble, Royal Court, Punchdrunk and the Unicorn Theatre.

Barry has worked as a visiting lecturer at Central since 2012 leading sessions in acting, audition technique, theatre-making and facilitation. He is a lead tutor on the Acting Diploma and has directed end of year productions. He also works with Central’s business team delivering sessions in communication, creative facilitation and presentation. Clients include Disney, The Financial Times, TUI, M&S, Sky and The Royal College of Surgeons.

Barry is an Associate Artist with Outbox Theatre, a company of LGBTQIA+ creatives, performing with them in productions at the Arcola Theatre, Birmingham Rep, Bush Theatre, Contact Theatre, Hackney Showroom and Shoreditch Town Hall. He leads on Outbox’s outreach work delivering sessions with groups across the country and at venues including Bristol Old Vic, Birmingham Rep, Leeds Playhouse and Royal Court. Barry is also an Artist-in-Residence at VISUAL Carlow, one of the leading art centres in Ireland.

Barry is the lead acting tutor on the ‘TransActing’ project, a collaboration between Gendered Intelligence and Central, which works to engage trans and/or non-binary people in the creative and cultural sector. He has led project workshops across the UK and been invited to showcase the work at festivals such as BFI Flare (London), SQIFF (Glasgow) and TransArte Festival (Rio de Janeiro).
