With the broadest linguistic capability of any UK theatre department, historical expertise across theatrical disciplines as well as fine art, cinema, cultural criticism, cultural policy and philosophy, and practical experience in theatre-making from directing to scenography, Central boasts researchers working across a range of areas.

With postdoctoral researchers funded by the Leverhulme Trust, AHRC and the British Academy, award-winning doctoral students in areas from dramaturgy to social theatre, and staff engaged in externally funded collaborative projects with Bexley Council, Ohio State University and Royal Holloway, our researchers pursue research that is innovative, influential and engaged with industry. Staff have been winners (2015, 2016) of TaPRA’s David Bradby Award, Editing Award (2017) and runners up of both these awards (2017, 2018) and the Early Career Prize (2018). Other recent awards include the Oscar G. Brockett Book Prize for Dance Research (2018), the Cross of Alfonso X the Wise (2017) and a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award (2018). Staff were runners up in both the Times Higher and the Guardian University Awards in 2017.
