Learning Skills

Learning Skills is a service that the Learning Centre offers to support students to develop their knowledge and skills in writing for academic purposes and in learning technologies.

Learning Skills

Learning Skills is a service offered to all Central students throughout the academic year.

Group Sessions

The Learning Skills programme offers a range of interactive sessions under the following categories:

  • Academic Writing and Skills
  • Research Skills
  • Organisation and Time Management
  • Presentation Skills
  • Digital Media Skills
  • Learning Technologies
  • Academic Support for International Students
  • Information Literacy Skills

Sessions are interactive and mostly offered in small group settings with the option for students to also book a one to one session via the Learning Centre. Details of programmed group sessions are available to view and book on the Learning Centre learnzone page (Central's VLE).

One to Ones

One to ones are offered to provide personalised academic support in 20 minute sessions.

In these sessions you will receive generic support on your work in line with your tutors feedback and course requirements.

We ask that you email a copy or link to the work you want to discuss along with an outline of issues you want to focus on, at least two days before the session. This will give us enough time to look through your work in advance of meeting you.

Remember, we don't offer a proofreading service and don't advise on content because that is specific to you and your course. One to ones are purely designed to provide you with general academic support and helping you to develop your learning skills.

Digital Skills

Alongside the face to face contact, Learning Skills support is also offered via a range of multi modal formats such as video, external web links, supplementary e-Portfolio and digital handouts.

Information about all Learning Centre provision including Disability and Dyslexia related support is available via the Learning Centre’s Learnzone pages.

We're here to help! So come along to a session, practice some skills and meet some fellow Central students.

One Week Pre-Course for International Students

We offer a one week pre-course for international students to make the transition to studying at a UK university college easier.

The tutor was extremely helpful in talking through the overall argument of my thesis as well as focusing specifically on the chapter at hand. We began to make a plan for the successful execution of this reworked chapter.

Very clear and informative. There was time to catch up with everything that was going on and we weren't overloaded with information either!
