Support Access to Central Bursaries

Introduction to Access to Central Bursaries

Artistic talent and potential can be found in every corner of society, and the ability to access specialist training in performing arts should be available to everyone who has the potential and talent, regardless of their circumstances. The current cost of living means accessing the high-quality training Central offers is increasingly out of reach. We are committed to changing this.

“Receiving this bursary has given me the chance to put my all into my work without having to worry about how I’m going to pay rent… It has taken away any sense of worry I would have had about moving to London, especially in this cost-of-living crisis.”

The cost of living in London is at a record high. Based on Central’s data, students need on average close to £20,000 a year just for their living and course related costs. This is over £6,000 more than the maximum student maintenance loan available to students. Our bursaries aim to alleviate this financial burden and allow students to thrive and focus on their studies.

With your help, we can offer financial assistance to more talented individuals who might otherwise be unable to accept the offer of a place at Central.

The Access to Central Bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need. It is given to UK-based undergraduate students whose combined household income is below £35,000 a year. Through this bursary, we can promote equity and help those who need it the most. According to Arts Council England, only 13% of workers in the arts and culture workforce are from a lower socio-economic background and the avenues to access training are becoming narrower each year. With government funding and support at an all-time low, it is more important than ever that we support those who would not be able to access training without support.

“I’m from Port Talbot in Wales, where acting legends such as Anthony Hopkins, Michael Sheen, and Richard Burton were born and raised. When I first came to London I was shocked to discover how extortionate the cost of living was, and really struggled to buy food, let alone pay rent. However, your kind support has meant that I can afford to come back and continue to live in London and support myself.”
