We believe that financial circumstances should never prevent gifted students from benefitting from the Central experience and, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, we have been able to support an increasing number of students each year.
Below you will find a small selection of stories about how donations have helped support our students.
Central is known in the industry for training versatile actors who are from a mixture of backgrounds. It is what makes us stand out from the rest. So when I talk to the secondary school-aged drama students and find that the scare stories in the press about student debt are putting them off going to drama school it makes me very sad. If we don’t provide scholarship support of some kind we risk watching these students slip through cracks simply because they can't afford it.
Cush Jumbo, BA (Hons) Acting 2006
The award I received can only be described as a lifeline, covering the fundamentals I needed to market myself in my third year and providing me with a safety cushion, so I didn’t have to choose between starving myself or burning the post-midnight oil by working in a bar every night. Each new generation of acting students has to deal with competing in a well over-saturated market and the cost of competing is only getting bigger and bigger. Support from friends of Central and our alumni has never been more imperative to student survival and the lineage of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. I only wish every student was afforded the opportunity I was.
Jason Broderick, BA (Hons) Acting 2012
Coming to Central was the best decision I ever made. My acting technique has improved massively and my dream of becoming a professional actress seems like a reality. This would not have been possible without getting a scholarship. I was terrified that I would have to drop out but, thanks to this support, I was able to continue with the course. I cannot thank my supporter enough; it has literally changed my life.’
Charlotte Victoria, MA Acting for Screen 2012
Had I not been awarded a scholarship then I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today. Without this financial assistance I am sure I would have had to turn down my place at Central and would still be searching for a way to live my dreams of becoming a professional actor.
Rick Woska, MA Music Theatre 2012
The scholarship was something I never expected and I feel so lucky and honoured to be supported in such a generous way. Having someone behind me really drives me to pursue my goals, especially in an industry as fierce as theatre. I want to say thank you to my supporter from the bottom of my heart.
