Discover the creative possibilities of sound design through this practical online course.

The creation of soundscapes is integral to performance and storytelling. This four week course guides you through essential techniques on sourcing, gathering and creating sound effects as well as recording, editing and manipulating them. You will then apply these techniques to create an original piece of audio composition to accompany a short story or poem.

We recommend that you have access to the below items to make the most of your course:

  • Phone with ability to record audio or a portable recording device
  • We will use Audacity to deliver this course which is freely available and compatible with both Windows and Mac OS.

You may also use one of the following software packages if you already have access to them:

  • Reaper - 60 day trial available (Mac/Windows/Linux)
  • Audition - 7 day trial available (Mac/Windows)

Optional software - you do not need these to take part in the course, but they may be useful for further work:

Please note that in the event of this course being cancelled, Central will not be liable for costs relating to course materials. Therefore, we recommend that you only purchase course materials once you have received confirmation that the course is going ahead

Days Various. The course consists of 8 sessions in total and is delivered either twice a week for 4 weeks or once a week for 8 weeks.
TimesAll times listed are either GMT or GMT +1 (depending on the time of year). If you’re joining from overseas, please use a timezone convertor before booking to establish what the local time will be for you. 
AgeThe minimum age is 18 on the first day of the course. There is no upper age limit.

Course DeliveryAll of the Online Short Courses take place using Zoom. You will need to have access to a quiet room with no other people present, and space to move around to take part in this course.
International studentsYou are welcome to join this course from anywhere in the world.
Language requirementsApplicants must be confident speaking and reading English to a conversational level (IELTS score of 7.0 or equivalent). You may be expected to read texts/scripts that have advanced vocabulary.
AttendanceDue to the structure and the collaborative nature of the courses, full attendance is requested.
RefundsWe are able to offer a full refund up until 7 days before the course begins. After this, the course will become fully non-refundable.
Cancellations Central reserves the right to cancel this course if we do not meet the minimum number of participants. In this instance, a full refund will be made to you. We are unable to refund any other costs you may have incurred.
