Nominations for the American Theatre Wing’s 72nd Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards® have been announced.
We are delighted to see that a number of Central alumni have been nominated, or have worked on productions that have been nominated, namely:
Andrew Garfield (BA (Hons) Acting 2004), nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Prior Walter in Angels in America, which he’s performed at London’s National Theatre and on Broadway.
Finn Ross (BA (Hons) Theatre Practice 2003) and Adam Young (BA (Hons) Theatre Practice 2010), co-nominated alongside Scott Pask for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for their work providing video design for Sonia Friedman’s (Tech 1985) production of Mean Girls.
Gareth Fry (BA (Hons) Theatre Practice 1996) and Tom Gibbons (BA (Hons) Theatre Practice 2008), both nominated for Best Sound Design; Gareth for his work on Sonia Friedman’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two, and Tom for his work on Duncan Macmillan’s (MA Advanced Theatre Practice 2002) adaptation of 1984.
In addition to the above, Sonia Friedman’s productions, Farinelli and The King and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two have been nominated for Best Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play and Best Scenic Design in a Play.
Frozen, directed by Central President and alumnus Michael Grandage (Stage 1984), and Mean Girls produced by Sonia Friedman, were both nominated for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.
Marking 72 years of excellence on Broadway, The Tony Awards, will be hosted by Tony Award Nominees Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, and will be broadcast live from the Radio City Music Hall on CBS, on Sunday, June 10th, 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. (ET/PT time delay).
