Oscar Nominatons 2018

The 90th Academy Award nominations have been announced, and we’re delighted to see that a number of the films nominated included involvement from Central graduates, both on and off screen.

Nominated in the category of Best Animation was Pixar’s Coco, for which Gael García Bernal (Stage 2000) voiced the character of Hector.

The Darkest Hour, which starred Kristin Scott Thomas (B.Ed Speech and Drama 1980), and Dunkirk, which included performance from Michael Fox (BA (Hons) Acting CDT 2013) and special effects assistance from Simon Paraskevas (BA (Hons) Theatre Practice 2014), have both been nominated for Best Picture.

The Darkest Hour went on to receive a further four nominations, and Dunkirk received a further seven, with both also being nominated for Best Production Design alongside Beauty and The Beast, for which Simon had also provided special effects assistance.

Members of the Academy will now vote for the winners in all 24 categories, and the awards ceremony will be presented by Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday 4 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The Academy Award nominations follow recent successes for Central alumni who received nominations for the BAFTAs, What’s On Stage Awards, and wins in the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, with several alumni placing in the Stage 100 - a ‘definitive list of theatre’s most influential people and partnerships’ produced annually by The Stage.
