Physical Actor Training - an Online A-Z, research event at Central

Speakers: Paul Allain (Project PI and Professor of Theatre and Performance and Associate Dean (Research), University of Kent) and Stacie Lee Bennett (Project Leverhulme-funded Research Associate, University of Kent)

Location: Central

If we want to research and analyse acting, and especially what can be called physical acting, how do we talk or write about movement, space, rhythm and sound/voice? What are the limitations of text for documenting and analysing such processes? Are there better ways of opening up this area and actor training in particular to practitioners, academics and students?

Physical Actor Training – an online A-Z will develop for Methuen Drama Bloomsbury an A-Z of short digitally augmented films and commentaries to best capture the experience of foundational training. The resource aims to show the complexity of the training process from a richer perspective than just another ‘How to Act’ guide. With a digital outlook, it will broaden the scope for epistemological reflexivity in new trainees and hope to foster perceptual abilities equivalent to those which are encouraged in physical actor training. Producing a framework that supports practice-as-research and interdisciplinary investigation, as opposed to text-only approaches, this resource can continue to evolve flexibly as technologies develop. The future is, after all, digital.

Paul and Stacie’s presentation will introduce the project and present examples of the A-Z.
