Theatre & Dance by Kate Elswit

Please join Kate Elswit at the book launch to celebrate the recent publication of Theatre & Dance (Theatre& series, 2018).  This succinct and engaging text explores the interdependence between theatre and dance.

Making a compelling case for the significance of resisting genre distinctions in the arts, Elswit demonstrates why and how the ampersand between theatre and dance needs to be understood as the rule, rather than the exception.  This illuminating guide focuses on the interconnected ecosystems of practice that constitute performance history, the expansion of theatre and dance forms on contemporary North American and European stages, and the disciplinary methods that scholars use today to understand such practices, both past and present.

"Kate Elswit prompts us with wonderful international examples to consider the historical merits and future possibilities of this dynamic partnership." - Melissa Blanco Borelli

"A brilliantly lucid account of the tangled histories & contemporary partnership of theatre and dance." - Susan Manning

"The ideal guide to the complex entanglements of theatre and dance.  A distillation of Elswit's expertise, broad in scope and rich in elegantly formulated insights." - Nicholas Ridout

“The book was excellent ... If you work in a department of Theatre and Dance and you have an annual department retreat, I do think everyone should buy this book and read it and talk about it together.” - On TAP Podcast

Kate Elswit is Reader in Theatre and Performance at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, UK, and author of Watching Weimar Dance (2014) and Theatre & Dance (2018).  She has won four major awards for scholarly publications ― the latest being the Oscar G. Brockett Book Prize for Dance Research from the Dance Studies Association.
