The lower half of a woman's dress, in front of a black background

This talk, based on Avra Sidiropoulou’s recently published monograph Directions for Directing. Theatre and Method (Routledge 2018), sets out to explore the perennial fascination that directing holds, being, arguably, one of the most synthetic creative disciplines.

Drawing on her experience as a theatre practitioner, Avra will focus on some constitutional elements of this dual art to illustrate that, much though directing is about instinct and style, it is also about technique, form, control of the stage, developing your own language, and making informed choices. A highly elusive mental process, directing is also a craft that can be taught through solid methodology and training either within a formal academic context, a “hands-on” rehearsal context or both.

Avra Sidiropoulou is Assistant Professor at the Open University of Cyprus and also Artistic Director of Persona Theatre Company.
