Devised Pieces, Instructions and Stimuli

Devised Pieces, Instructions and Paintings

We would like you to create a 30 - 90 second solo devised piece inspired by one of the stimuli below.

You are encouraged to use movement and voice to create a piece that is a clear response to the image and also introduces us to your individual creative voice. We want to see who you are and how you express yourself through your work.

This could take any form: including storytelling, stand up, self-penned monologue, puppetry, mask work, soundscape, dance or movement piece… but it has to be by you and you have to be in it.

We encourage you to create a piece that suits the audition format you choose (either live or online) and if you submit your audition via self-tape please make sure that the shot is framed so we can see your full performance.

For onsite applicants you are welcome to bring music and/or small props if this would suit your performance.

If so, we ask that anything brought in is safe to use and can be cleared and tidied easily.

You will have a minute to prepare prior to presenting your devised piece.

Stimuli are below, use your imagination and have fun!

  • WRAP

Black and white photography, depicting a couple wrapped in white, blanched gauze, their heads tied together into a cocoon like, sculptural form. One half of the couple has their mouth open and there is no gauze on that part of their face.

  • MOVE

A colourful pastel drawing representing two moving figures. Set on a light grey-brown background, the figures are drawn with stretched limbs and extremities, as if they are jumping or dancing. The bodies are very colourful, with mainly touches of yellow, pink, blue and black running through them.

  • PAINT

Smears of paint on a beige background. Different patches of paint blend into each other, leaving multi-coloured smears on the canvas. The dominant colours are light pink, blue, red and yellow.

  • PLAY

Audio description: This soundtrack begins with some radio interference. It is followed by the sound of an orchestra tuning up while voices and cutlery from a café or restaurant can also be heard. More radio interference can be perceived, followed by new voices and the sound of bells in the background. The bells grow louder and the track ends with the sound of a baby laughing.
