The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama is committed to environmental sustainability.

Placing students at the centre of its work, Central develops practitioners and researchers who shape the future of theatre and performance across the UK and beyond. Central’s alumni have a notable impact on the world of British and sometimes international drama. It therefore follows that we have a responsibility to develop ‘sustainable practitioners’ to ensure that theatre and performance are at the forefront of excellent environmental practice. Environmental sustainability is embedded within Central’s Corporate Plan (2013-2018). The School is committed, as part of its institutional identity, to maintaining a sustainable institution and recognises both the challenge and need to optimise environmental performance to enhance economic sustainability.

The environment in which we operate presents many challenges and opportunities. Participation in the Carbon Management Programme has enabled Central to access a proven framework and expert advice in the identification of and implementation of projects to reduce our carbon emissions by 25% by August 2015 from the 2009/10 baseline. Governors, managers, staff and students all have an important role to play and can make a positive difference. The Central community has contributed ideas that will reduce our carbon footprint and we encourage members of the community to bring to management’s attention any further opportunities for improvement.

Current Projects

  • Catering

The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama work in partnership with Harrison Catering.

Embedding good environmental practices into how we source, prepare, and process food to enhance our environmental performance and reduce the impacts of the food we serve across our campus

  • Doctor Bike

At Dr Bike sessions experienced mechanics check everything on your bike from wheels, brakes, gears and tyre pressure to lights, racks, pedals, saddles and more.

Any minor adjustments we can make to the bike we do there and then. Anything we can’t fix on site we will let you know exactly what needs doing and a rough guide to what it should cost at a bike shop.

All of the mechanics are friendly and approachable and have a wealth of cycling knowledge so feel free to ask about cycle training or other cycling activities.

Doctor Bike visits Central 3-4 times a year. Upcoming dates will be communicated through the staff and student newsletters.

  • Gardening at St Peter's Belsize Park

Central students and staff are invited to enjoy the garden and help with weeding and tidying the garden area and planting seeds, saplings or bulbs at St Peter’s.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the physical, therapeutic and mental health benefits of the garden and gardening.

The facilities department will provide all of the necessary tools.

Contact the Student Environment Officers or Facilities for a key.

  • Recycling

Central achieved Bronze standard for recycling in 2021 by First Mile.

  • Vegware

Central’s canteen uses Vegware - the only plant-based compostable foodservice packaging. We have invested and installed new compostable bins around campus that clearly state that they are for the Vegware packaging only.
