Cis Berry in Memorium

“Central was the centre of my life in so many ways” Cis Berry

Since Cis Berry's passing, Central has been working with her family to raise funds towards a scholarship or bursary for our voice students. We're so grateful for the donations we've received so far, and details of how to give can be found below

Cis Berry had a very strong relationship with Central School of Speech and Drama: she attended the School as a student on the Teaching Course from 1943–1946 and then returned to the School in the 1950s to teach, which she continued for many years.  “Central was the centre of my life in so many ways”, she said of her time at the School, and her incredible impact on the field of Voice Studies at Central and more generally cannot be overstated.

In 2012, Cis Berry was appointed Vice President of the School at an event to unveil her official portrait, which hangs alongside portraits of Central’s founder, Elsie Fogerty and Gwynneth Thurburn, Central alumna, eminent voice teacher, Vice-Principal, and, later Principal of the School.  Berry commented at the time that to have her “portrait hanging beside Fogerty and Thurby could not be a greater honour”.

Scholarships are vital for Central’s students. Our training is intensive (a typical student day runs from 9am-6pm with rehearsals and performances). This means that it is difficult for our students support their fees and living costs by taking jobs alongside their studies.

Scholarships can reduce the financial barrier that deters some from training and working in the performing arts.  Gifts for scholarships prevent the performing arts industries losing the talented people it needs to flourish.

Every single donation made will directly help our voice students to experience Central’s gold-standard voice education that Cis Berry played such a large part in creating.
