Charla Givans

Abstract

The research outcome is to develop and pilot a dramatherapy evaluation model for children and young people with depression; one that may be used with other client groups and by other arts therapists.

The project addresses the need for a larger body of evidence-based research within the arts therapies. Research includes an analysis of current NHS interventions (such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, pharmacology, and psychotherapy) and an investigation of how such treatments are being measured for effectiveness.

Through poetic inquiry, heuristics, phenomenology and Jungian psychology, the research critiques the current and historical views of depression and contemplates how such views dictate what is regarded as ‘successful’ treatment. The argument supports a move from pathology and medicalisation to integration and process.
