Abstract

My research focuses on questions of cultural identity and the formation of Spanish Music Theatre. Music Theatre in Spain has existed since olden times, but what we know today as Music Theatre is a completely new and unknown imported genre that has suddenly become a great success in the country. Essentially big foreign companies have been translating the originally English written musicals, leaving in place the original production values and the Anglo-Saxon cultural trends.

Abstract of project
This practice-based research engages with post-structuralist theories of laughter, feminist theories of humour, and burlesque and stand-up comedy performance practices to locate, illuminate, and exploit the dissonance between laughter and desire. It reconsiders Patraka's notion of binary terror in the context of simultaneously sexy and funny female performance. It proposes exposing the ironic tension of Willson's theory of feminist fluidity as a comedic strategy for the burlesque body.
