Nick Moseley, BA, PGCE, MA, SFHEA

Job title

Principal Lecturer, Course Leader Acting (BA)

Profile

I am a specialist in conservatoire actor training and a writer on methods of acting.

After graduating from the University of Kent in 1983 I spent a year working for Ann Jellicoe and the Colway Theatre Trust, before getting my Equity Card as an Acting ASM with Orchard Theatre in Barnstaple. I spent two years on tour with Orchard, learning my craft the old-fashioned way by watching seasoned actors work! I subsequently worked as an actor for (among others) the Royal Theatre, Northampton; White Horse Theatre, West Germany; Somerset and Dorset Theatre Company and Rob Kennedy Productions in the West End. In my ‘down’ times I worked as a drama workshopper for London Bubble Theatre, doing drama workshops with schools, traveller communities and people with disabilities.

In 1989 I enrolled on a PGCE at Goldsmiths College, initially just to provide useful way of earning when not acting, but I instantly took to teaching and landed a job as Head of Drama at Ricards Lodge High School, Wimbledon. After three years I switched to FE, and became Head of Drama at East Berkshire College, where I was part of a team building and expanding the Performing Arts department, besides mentoring a number of new teachers, some from Central’s PGCE. At this time I also gained an MA in Drama and Theatre Studies from Royal Holloway.

In1997 I became Course Director for the emerging BA (Hons) Acting course at Italia Conti. There I built a new team, and started to develop my own theories of acting, based partly on the work of Sanford Meisner. These led to the publication of Acting and Reacting (2005).

The following year I became Pathway Leader (later Course Leader) of the undergraduate Acting course at Central. Further work on Meisner Technique resulted in Meisner in Practice (2012). In April 2016 my latest volume Actioning and How to Do It was published, based on my teaching and research around the technique of psychophysical actioning.

Actors I have trained include Jamie Davis (Switch) Vanessa Hehir (Waterloo Road), Philip Michael (Mamma Mia), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Paula Lane (Coronation Street), Luke Norris (Poldark), Danny Horn (Sunny Afternoon), Sarah Schoenbeck (4 O’Clock Club), Jack Hamilton (Apple Tree Yard) and Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk)
