Profile

I began my career studying music at London’s Teach Music Schools, emerging into industry as a session musician and touring and recording with an eclectic range of artists and bands.

In addition to performance work, I was also teaching music in schools and FE colleges across London and the Home Counties, before taking up the roles of lecturer and Programme Leadership at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. Most recently, I held the post of Head of Higher Education for BIMM University’s London campus during which I led on the development of their Music Performance course curriculum across all BIMM University music colleges.

My main area of specialism is percussion and I have been a regular contributor to Rhythm Magazine. This included a series of articles exploring ergonomics and the physiology of drum kit performance, written collaboratively with members of BAPAM (British Association for Performance Arts Medicine) and others, and exploring theory and approaches to ‘use the self’ for musical expression while drumming.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and see this as an ongoing commitment to the support of colleagues, to reflect on how our practice aligns with a National Professional Standards Framework, and how we can contextualise and continuously review what this means for the study of subject areas linked to the Creative Arts industries.
