Abstract
My research focuses on questions of cultural identity and the formation of Spanish Music Theatre. Music Theatre in Spain has existed since olden times, but what we know today as Music Theatre is a completely new and unknown imported genre that has suddenly become a great success in the country. Essentially big foreign companies have been translating the originally English written musicals, leaving in place the original production values and the Anglo-Saxon cultural trends. But what if we try to create an avenue for the genre with purely Spanish materials? Why did the Spanish musical theatre tradition stop after the Zarzuela? Why has it not incorporated other theatrical music genres such as Copla? And what if we try to catch up now that we know the possibilities of the genre?
