Giulia Pecorari, MA

Job title

Lecturer, Costume Construction

I am a costume designer and maker for performance and films. I grew up in Florence, Italy, where I studied pattern cutting and garment technology at Polimoda International Institute of Fashion Design & Marketing. I hold an MA in Costume Design for Performance from London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, London.

My practice concerns the relationship between the performer's movement and the costume and how a costume’s transformation, caused by an interaction with the performer, can express meaning. In this way, the costume becomes closer to a piece of art rather than just a piece of clothing and it is through performance that this research comes to life.

I worked at the beginning of my career for the Italian Choreographer and Venice Biennale Dance Director Virglio Sieni. This gave me an awareness of new forms of communication through the body and movement, and how these can relate more closely to the world of costume. The demands of making costumes for a moving body have challenged and inspired me throughout my career.

I have constructed the vast majority of the costumes I have designed for performance, this knowledge of making has given me the key to understand clothing in depth and has provided me with freedom of expression. Researching new materials for wearables has been an ongoing fascination for me and took me into a yearlong collaboration with Studio XO, a leading fashion technology studio where I was the link between clothing and engineering. Here I worked on projects for Lady Gaga and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance among others.

My current work investigates the way materials transform and behave, and how these can be used to represent the human condition. I analyse the meaning that materials hold and how these properties can feed into the narrative of performative clothing.
