Today we are speaking with Marian Lee, current student on the BA Acting CDT course, about her placement on the Kiln Theatre’s Young Writers Programme.

Tell us more about your placement

I took part in the Kiln Theatre’s Young Writers Programme, which ran for 8 weeks and started on the 19 November 2020. The sessions were led by Playwright and Kiln Theatre New Work Associate Tom Wright.

I applied for this programme because I wanted to learn how to write a stage play. My course has always been encouraging us to create our own work and this project has given me confidence in writing, especially writing about a story based on real life events.

What has surprised you most about your experience?

Writing a stage play is an inclusive activity that’s open to everyone, even when English is not your first language.

What are you working on now?

I am currently writing a script for the ‘Keep Creating’ Gala for Central, an online event in May.

How did you find out about Central and decide to study with us?

I found out about Central when I was searching for the best drama schools in the UK. The audition at Central felt very nice, and my course, BA Acting CDT (Collaborative and Devised Theatre), is unique to Central.

What are you planning to do after graduation?

I’m not sure yet. I used to think I can only do acting, but my course and the experience with the Kiln have really given me hope to become a director and a writer too. I enjoy creating my own work, but I think I still need more confidence to be an independent creative worker.
