The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has awarded Christopher Knowlton (BA Theatre Practice 06) its Young Lighter of the Year award following a presentation on his work creating user-controlled environments.

SLL’s awards provide a chance for young lighting students and professionals to investigate a lighting subject of their choice. Knowlton used a temporary lighting installation in an office space and offered users the ability to control their lit environment through their iPhones.

‘The user-controlled lighting system provided a substantial energy saving of well over 60% as compared to a fully automated model of control. However, the most important conclusion was that participants were more comfortable and user engagement was considerably higher,’ says Knowlton. ‘I’m thrilled to have won the award of Young Lighter of the Year and to have the opportunity to share my work with the lighting community.’

Knowlton was also awarded the Institute of Lighting Professionals prize for best written paper.
