The Culture Capital Exchange's Creative Leadership Now event

On 24 June Central’s Dr Nicola Abraham (Senior Lecturer, Applied Theatre Practices) and Dr Javeria Shah (Academic/ Schoolwide Inclusion Specialist and founder of the Social Performance Network) presented at The Culture Capital Campaign’s event ‘Approaching Creative Leadership Now’

The free half-day workshop on new thinking in creative leadership was presented by The Culture Captial Exchange (TCCE) for aspiring, emergent and current leaders in higher education and the arts. In a world changed by the pandemic, change has also happened in the way that we work – and in how we work together. Change is also being sought from leaders as ways of working have shifted to become more distributed and responsive. But alongside the challenges facing institutions and cultural organisations, there are also opportunities. The event explored current, urgent, and emergent issues and considered how current and future leaders in our sectors can adapt to and think about our post Covid futures.

As a part of the workshop, Dr Abraham discussed her ongoing collaboration with the NHS and Imperial College Healthcare trust and provided insight into how to work responsively through horizontal leadership structures in acute hospital settings focusing on wellbeing, care and active listening. Dr Shah’s presentation focused on taking leadership off-script in a call to humanise management and leadership cultures.

Of her involvement in the event, Dr Abraham said:

“It was inspiring to hear insights into the ways different practitioners, institutions and charities have adapted to the needs of those they work with as a result of the pandemic. There are many lessons to be learnt and many innovations to be celebrated. I feel privileged to be amongst such brilliant thinkers, artists and advocates of positive change and would like to thank TCCE tor the opportunity to share what we have learnt together.”

Dr Javeria Shah said:

“It has been an absolute honour to contribute Rebekka’s publication in my uncensored call to take management and leadership cultures ‘offscript’. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the related event and have taken so much from it.”

Other Contributors included Dr Rebekka Kill (TCCE), Dr Bill Balaskas (Kingston School of Art), Dr Cara Courage (Tate Exchange), Pauline Rutter (TCCE), Professor Paul Hollins (Leeds Conservatoire), Ceinwen Paynton (National Trust), Idrees Rasouli (Cambridge School of Art), Dr Javeria Shah (Central School of Speech and Drama), Claire Malcolm (New Writing North), Dr Sara Jones (City, University of London), and Evelyn Wilson (TCCE).
