NOTE ABOUT FRESHERS' WEEK 2011 THEME IN LIGHT OF RECENT LONDON RIOTS:
The theme of our Freshers' Week 2011, Cops and Robbers, was decided many months ago. It was chosen to give our new students a fun, light-hearted group identity to celebrate the start of the new community they are about to become a part of. A community of people of all ages; all from a diverse range of backgrounds who have grabbed hold of their futures; many of them moving away from home to start a degree.
In light of recent events it is important however to reflect on this theme. We do not, in any way, aim to make light of these events or the victims with our theme. Whilst we do not feel that we should not allow these events to dictate what should be a positive, fun and social event we also feel it would be insensitive to ignore the implications that a 'Cops and Robbers' theme could have.
As a result of this, we would like our Freshers' Week and indeed its theme to celebrate and highlight our new community and culture, one that is the complete opposite of the culture displayed in recent events. As a further reach out to communities affected by these events we will be donating any profits made in our Freshers Week to a charity in support of victims of the riot.
